The EU Taxonomy is the European Union’s classification system for environmentally sustainable economic activities. For a project or activity to qualify as taxonomy-aligned, it must make a substantial contribution to at least one of six environmental objectives, do no significant harm to any of the others, and meet minimum social safeguards.
For construction and infrastructure projects, this translates into concrete requirements: building energy performance, climate risk and vulnerability screening, and life cycle carbon assessments, among others. Taxonomy alignment has become increasingly important for clients seeking sustainable financing or reporting under EU sustainability disclosure rules, even as recent simplifications have narrowed which companies face mandatory reporting.
